You’ve just ordered a chicken and rabbit Paella in a waterfront Valencia cafe. The menu has two listings, Rojo and Blanco, three Euros each. Without much hope, you order the red. When it arrives - poured to the brim in a rocks glass - you’re stunned by the quality, grace, and power of the fresh aromas pouring out of the glass. Ripe black plum, cassis, and cranberries all gently stewed; basil and tomato leaf, chilli flake, lemon pepper and sassafras. It makes you think just a little bit about Napa’s sunny, earthy Cabernets. The palate is defined by rich stewed berry compote, but there’s a pleasant earthy touch of graphite and clay, herbs dried in the sun, and pepper, all wrapped in substantial, velvety tannins. What a wine! What is this wine!? This is Valencia’s classic, indigenous grape Bobal, which is impressively obscure for being Spain’s 3rd most common red grape. At L&E, we’re pleased to offer Bodega Aranleon’s “Encuentro”, organically farmed more than 2000 feet above sea level. This is a showstopping Bobal and it will do just as well with the land-based Paella you make here.
