Both are farmed organically, and the wines are made naturally. Benoît, a charming fast-talker, is most at home in the vineyard waxing poetically in Franglais about this wild Ardechois terroir, arguably one of the least-tamed in France, a jumble of rolling hillsides and national parks featuring steep, swimmable river gorges where French adventure-seekers come for their summer holidays. In terms of wine, the Ardèche is akin to the Cotes du Rhone, but more fun. There’s far less pressure here to hit certain marks of ‘typicity’, so the region has fostered winemakers like Benoit and Florence who make something fundamentally new out of Grenache and Syrah. This Cuvee – named for the local name for a donkey – smells of strawberries and orange peel, dusty earth and sage and warm wind off the garrigue-crusted hills. The palate is bouncy and joyful, with raspberries and hood strawberries and orange zest and delicate tannins. This mouthwatering red is made for Turkey-centric feasts and good friends.

Nestled in the rugged countryside of Trevillach in foothills rising into the Pyrenees, Domaine de l‘Encantade looks like it was scooped out of the pages of a fairy tale. France’s Breton coast traditionally begins at the mouth of the Loire, and while the modern departments put Nantes in the Loire-Atlantique, it is still a city full of buckwheat Galettes, oysters, fish stews and Celtic motifs. Meanwhile, the jumbled granite shore that lines the coast of Morbihan and Finistere are broadly similar to the bedrock underneath the vines of Clisson and Les Gorges, two of Muscadet’s finest emerging Crus, where Stephan and Vincent Perraud manage Domaine des Cognettes. Les Deux Terres is a selection drawn from both these prized sites, and brilliantly captures the scent of granite (in Clisson) and Gabbro (in Gorges) and brine in the Atlantic air. Aged in traditional glass-lined underground tanks with the lees, this Muscadet doesn’t waste a drop of character from the vineyard. Aromas show flint and stony minerality, lime zest and lemon juice and salt. The palate is bright and crisp yet creamy textured, with lemon curd and tangerine fruits that lead to a lip-smacking salty finish. The Galets Cuvee, named for the ubiquitous rounded stones that define so many of the Rhone’s finest vineyards, is made from two thirds Syrah, one quarter Grenache, and equally small splashes of Mourvedre and Marselan, mostly classic varieties that age only in concrete. The wine smells of cherry pie, garrigue and barnyard and a bit of nutmeg. The palate is full bodied and full of black cherries, lingonberries, and dusty soil mixed with hefty tannins that put this wine on the menu next to heavy winter stews and roasts.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0685/3797/5088/files/0_54aab4e0-5f49-4daa-aede-e80618140212.jpg?v=1792187685
farina-valpolicella-classico-2025
Farina Valpolicella Classico 2025

Claudio and Elena Farina are cousins and the third generation of the family to run this small winery. Before the second world war, the family were sharecroppers in Valpolicella, farming wheat and grapes and keeping cattle. Italy’s economic revolution of the 1950s and 1960 allowed them to buy their farmhouse and specialize in growing grapes, a business they proved to be very good at. Today, Farina turns 45 hectares of vineyard into a dizzying range of wines, but one of the most important is this everyday red, the Valpolicella Classico, made from the classic blend of Corvina, Corvinonae, Rondinella and Molinara, aged in stainless tanks. The result is the essential Valpolicella red, with vibrant and bright aromas of red cherry, cranberry, marmalade and roses before a crunchy palate with tea-leaf tannins and red berries throughout with a touch of dried orange peel. Fans of Valpolicella will immediately recognize the easy, quaffable-yet-satisfying note the wine always seems to strike. The first thing you learn upon meeting Hubert and Christian Engel is that they are nerds. The second thing you learn is that they know their vineyards in and around the Praelatenberg Grand Cru to the pebble, and the third thing you learn is that they are spectacularly talented winemakers. They farm organically (the obvious choice, in their words), and make their wines carefully, taking full advantage of the rare Gneiss soils in their vineyards to infuse their wine with unusually powerful minerality. This edelzwicker blend combines Riesling with smaller portions of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chasselas and Sylvaner.This is essential Alsace: flinty fresh and sharp on the nose with fresh orange and lemon curd, roasted peaches and spring blossoms and honeycomb. The palate has elements of every sort of citrus fruit, apples and slate-like mineral undertones. The acidity is ever present but never sharp, and the finish goes on and on. There might not be a better choice for the turkey table, and we look forward to seeing Les Freres Engel in newsletters to come!

Rosalia Molina’s vineyards are in Manchuela, some of the highest elevation vineyards in all of Spain near the city of Cuenca, where she farms organically, vinifies naturally, and makes a wide range of wines from grapes both native and introduced. Growing grapes at more than 1100 meters elevation is difficult because grapes here struggle to ripen, but the hard work is worth it, because grapes grown here ripen with far more intense flavor and sturdier structure. The Enfoque Blanc is a 50/50 blend of Godello and Garnacha Blanca, a new blend that brings Spain’s northwest and east coast together in the mountainous middle. A wine from these two varieties can’t help but be intensely fruity on the nose, with notes of pineapple, persimmon and peach; but the elevation and distinct landscape offer a touch of bayleaf and salty essence.
