When Thomas Senger purchased a share of the generations-old Carrel family domaine, it was in order to preserve one of Savoie's stalwart traditional estates in the village of Jongieux, the warmest appellation the area on west-facing slopes near Lac du Bourget. The domaine makes the full range of Savoie: red gamay and Mondeuse, sparkling and white Altesse, but the backbone of the domaine is the Savoie standard: Jacquerre. A reliable vine that produces a good crop in cold sub-alpine conditions, this grape makes honest, bright and refreshing wines that don’t cost a lot but if you give them just a little bit of attention, they can show a surprising sort of depth. Look here for aromas of jasmine, apple, gooseberry, white pepper and lavender. Try the palate as clear and refreshing as a brook in a mountain meadow, with flavors of apple and juicy lemon and spring blossoms that linger on the finish. For a traditional meal, serve with raclette or a well stocked charcuterie board.
