Weingut Fidesser is a family operation. Brother and sister Rudi and Sophie, along with their parents Norbert and Gerda, make a range of lively, unadorned wines in the northern part of Austria's Weinviertel. In their words: "It is much more important to make wine that is naturally beautiful than the bite-sized rounding off of corners and edges. An honest product, in other words. We lay the foundation in the vineyard, With a lot of care, joy and biodynamics. According to the motto 'Let the wine do what it is', we create what we feel is right." Their vineyards are just a few miles from the Czech border, where they grow a range of grapes including the Blauer Portugieser and Zweigelt in this stunning light red. The nose is a full spectrum array of black cherry, pomegranate and raspberry tart with orange, saffron, black pepper and clay. The pepper lined palate is positively spicy, with blood orange and crunchy raspberry cast vivid and bright, bouncing with acidity. The finish leaves behind a note of red roses and rusty clay. This wine is a lot of fun and lends itself to all manner of foods (especially sausage!) but it's far more complex than its peers.
