For many years, the Gaglioppo grape of Ciro was known only as a densely tannic red suitable only for heavy, stewed dishes. A very small proportion of the grapes are made into Ciro Rosato, and Antonio Scala's version is among the very best. This is a variety that retains intense red fruit flavors and bright red color as a rose, with a nose of strawberry, rainier cherry, white pepper and granite soil. The zesty, medium-weight palate offers passionfruit, orange, pink grapefruit and cherry flavors with a dash of salt and lemon bitters on the finish.
