Cannonau is Sardinia's most famous grape variety, the special clone of Garnacha that's become synonymous with the rugged mountains and valleys of this island. Simone Sedilesu is a rising star of the island, known for his elegantly reimagined Cannonau that stands apart from the heavy handed, purely rustic Sardinian wines of old. Simone has been instrumental in establishing the new Barbagia district in one of the most isolated and mountainous parts of the island, around the towns of Nuoro and Mamoiada. This single vineyard Cannonau is his most elegant wine, silky and savory and wonderfully complex. The nose offers cherry and strawberry fruit, with dusty earth and a streak of iron and fennel. The palate is gift-wrapped with perfectly composed tannins, with resonant notes of cherry and clay, dusty underbrush and sage. This wine has all the warmth and richness of great Cannonau with the elegance and refinement normally credited to Piedmont's Nebbiolo.
