Coppo is one of the oldest wineries in Piedmont, with their cellar in Canelli rated a world heritage site, and one of just a handful of wineries permitted to vinify Barolo grapes outside the borders of the appellation. This 2019 edition has all the hallmarks of a great vintage except the price. The nose gives clear notes of redcurrant, cranberry, and strawberry with strong notes of anise, leather, cinnamon and burnt orange peel close behind. The palate shows great tension, with iron streaked black soil and licorice, black cherry, good grippy tannins that build towards the finish. Bitter herbs and black earth linger afterwards.
