Domaine de la Mavette’s winery is tucked into the woods above the village of Sablet and underneath the famous Dentelles de Montmiral that give topographical intrigue to Gigondas and Vacqueyras. Mavette makes great Gigondas and perhaps greater Sablet, but under the rougher and readier regional Vaucluse title, winemaker Jean-François Lambert takes advantage of the greater freedom to experiment he is given with the less prestigious appellation. This wine is made entirely from a grape called Caladoc, a crossing of Grenache with Malbec that has shown great promise along the Mediterranean coast with an ability to maintain acidity and structure through hot vintages. To be clear, this grape is not just useful, it is also delicious! Aromas burst out of rosehip and blueberry, rosemary, sage, and rustic earth. The palate is rambunctious, full of raspberries and cherries baked into a tart, with delicate tannins and fresh acid that lead into a finish of savory herbs, red fruits, and burnt orange peels. At $13 this wine is an outrageous value, and a thought-provoking sign of good things to come from the Rhone. Serve this alongside all the burgers and sammiches you were saving for your favorite Cotes-du-Rhone.
