Chateau Falfas Cotes du Bourg Le Chevalier 2017
Chateau Falfas Cotes du Bourg Le Chevalier 2017
Veronique Bouchet grew up in Saumur, daughter to Francois Bouchet, one of the original Biodynamic winemakers of the 1960s. Eventually she met a man named John and became Veronique Cochran, shortly before purchasing Chateau Falfas in the mid 1980s. By 1988 they had converted the property to biodynamic farming, and became very unusual Bordeaux winemakers in possession of a very unusual sort of Bordeaux Vineyard. The Cotes de Bourg is a relative nowhere on the Bordeaux map, a patch of vineyards in clay soil directly across the Gironde estuary from Pauillac. Falfas itself is perched on the unusually steep embankment directly by the river, so they have something very few Bordeaux vineyards have, a gently south facing slope. Therefore, while most everyone on the Right Bank devotes most of their vineyard to Merlot, Chateau Falfas has a relatively high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
Paired with their biodynamic farming, Falfas takes a gentle approach in the cellar. Native yeasts, no additions other than a judicious amount of sulfur, and long, slow, cool fermentations to strike a balance of intense, subtly layered flavor with relatively gentle tannin structure. This is, in essence, Bordeaux made in the style of the Loire.
Veronique retired after the 2021 vintage. A group of longtime fans of her work have purchased the Chateau, and there is reason to hope that the wine will remain the same exceptional Bordeaux it has been for almost 40 years.
