Domaine Marcel Deiss Alsace Engelgarten Le Jardin des Anges 2022
Alsace terroir can be measured with Burgundy-like precision. The two regions run parallel to each other: twin mountain ranges with a wide, southeast facing slope planted almost uniformly to vineyards. The steeper mid-slopes of both regions have generally come to be recognized as the best vineyards, or grand crus. In Burgundy, vineyards adjacent to those grand crus tend to be premier crus, but Alsace has no such designation (yet). The Engelgarten – “garden of the angels” – in Bergheim would be one of the first on the list. It is a rocky, free draining site directly up the hill from Altenberg de Bergheim, Deiss’ crown jewel vineyard and one of the most famous grand crus in Alsace. Engelgarten wines are almost as intense.
A blend of Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir (vinified white). Nose of roasted pear, cherrywood smoke, key lime, white roses, and strawberries. The palate is of lemon curd and strawberries, lime zest and flint on finish. Luxurious on the midpalate but razor sharp and dry on the finish, where orange notes linger.
