The aroma of this wine raises the question of grape vs. terroir in a profound way. The close relation to Syrah comes through in a distinctive meaty note, dark, brambly berries, and smoky tint. But there is something else in here too; a distinctly Italian note of clay marl, forest floor, and bitter herbs. On top of it all, a slice of orange peel is a welcome sign of the balancing act to come on the palate, where still-fresh acidity and time-worn tannins reach perfect harmony. Cherries, blackberries, and oranges mix with clay earth, Italian seasoning, and a little bacon fat that lingers nicely on the finish. In a blind tasting, I can see people guessing Cornas, Barbaresco, even a Taurasi, all with a decade or so of bottle age. There's nothing out there quite like this wine.
