The mountainous country that rises from the shore of the Gulf of Salerno is a nature park. It’s of the European style, where ancient villages still exist and people still live, but there are strict rules prohibiting further development that would destroy the rustic feeling of the countryside. In this setting, the organically farmed vineyards of La Capranera make a picturesque backdrop for stunning views out over the Mediterranean Sea. The wines that grow here have that same sense of rustic charm, but La Capranera’s wines are also some of the best value in Campania. Closer to the sea than most Campanian wines, their wines smell just a little fresher and breezier than their cousins from inland Irpinia, where most of Campania’s large wineries are based. The Falanghina grape is at its best right next to the ocean, as evinced by the soaring and complex editions from the Costa d'Amalfi, and this one from just a little way to the south is another prime example, with sea breeze fresh aromas of peach and lemon, rosemary, white tea leaf, flint and salt. The palate is rich with juicy peaches and oranges and margarita salt. Full bodied but full of energy and great for crab, lobster, or shrimp and grits.
