Helmut Crist started farming his vineyards organically in 1974, concerned with soil erosion in his hillside vineyards under conventional mono-cultural practice, and his own health working with synthetic fertilizers. In part because he was first to the table, he became the leading organic grower in Franken, inspiring the latest generation of small scale vine growers, making ever more interesting wines. This Liter bottle is a brilliant edition of Silvaner, a grape too often relegated to the bulk aisle but capable of stunningly crisp and complex wine when given the chance to shine. Aromas of applesauce and slate, smoked orange peel, and coriander lead to a delicately balanced palate with enough body to chew on but shimmering with acidity and flavors of lemon and apple and pear, with steely minerality bursting on the finish. Pair with northern Indian cuisine and all the fall classics.
