Vino Nobile de Montepulciano is one of Tuscany’s great red wines, and Caterina Dei is one of the best in the business with a range of captivating Sangiovese-based wines made in a pure, energetic style. However, the vineyard directly around the winery – along the road called Martiena – was long planted to white grapes, and in homage, Caterina makes this appealing blend of Malvasia, Grechetto and Trebbiano, capturing the old school fresh orchard feeling of classic Tuscan white wine. Fermented cool and aged in stainless steel to better preserve fresh fruit aromas, there’s plenty of room in the glass for the warm Tuscan sun. Aromas of plantain, peach whipped cream and jasmine put us in the mood for pina coladas. The palate is more restrained, with plenty of lemon and nectarine on the palate but wave after wave of crashing salty minerality. Touches of coriander and oregano linger on the finish to remind us of the wine’s origins. Serve with hearty seafood pastas, grilled shrimp, and zucchini-based dishes.
