At the mouth of the Valle d'Aoste, the village of Carema clings precariously to the side of a mountain, surrounded on all sides by terraced vineyards with ancient Nebbiolo vines. It is a place that came very close to fading away, or falling down the mountain as the ancient stone walls holding up the terraces crumbled. Luigi Ferrando almost singlehandedly saved the region with his wines. His Carema is unlike any other you'll find in Barolo, the Langhe, or even nearby Gattinara. This is Nebbiolo at it's most ethereal, most aromatic, yet still taut and and cut with tannins to last decades. This wine is simple brilliance.
