Claudio Fennocchio is among the unsung heroes of Barolo. He took over the estate from his father in 1989, right when many of his peers changed their winemaking chasing after critical scores. Claudio never did, and still makes his wine in a strictly traditional way, using large, old barrels, organic farming, and long, slow fermentations. The 2019 edition of his Castellero Cru is sublime, with all the delicacy of the vintage. Aromas of cherry fruit leather, pepper, earth and savory spices, and tar. Claudio is something of a tannin specialist, and this wine has strong, firmly built yet elegantly expressed tannins that will keep this wine together for years of development.
