Vignalta Colli Euganei Rosso Gemola 2017
Vignalta Colli Euganei Rosso Gemola 2017
Vignalta’s story begins in 1980, with Lucio Gomiero, but the story of Bordeaux varieties in the Colli Euganei is much older. It comes back to people who have had a tremendous influence on the course of wine history, the Venetians. In the later days of the Republic, Venetian nobility embraced French culture, and Bordeaux became a particular favorite. French vines were imported and planted in the Colli Euganei, a place with a roughly similar climate and proximity to the water. When Lucio Gomiero planted his vineyards, he was continuing a long tradition of Bordeaux grapes in the region, but he certainly had a significant influence in raising the standards of the area, for much of the 20th century languishing in mediocrity. With about fifty five hectares of vineyards, he is the largest quality-minded producer in the region.
Nose of tamarind, blackberry, tomato leaf, roasted bell pepper, black pepper, vanilla bean. Palate is pillowy smooth at first, but the tannins arrive on the midpalate, and they are dense! Big black fruit flavors, baking spices – cinnamon and nutmeg and allspice – orange oil and baker’s chocolate. Give it air or give it age!
