Jean-Louis Mourre works mainly in Vacqueyras, and his wines are a dependable choice for the classic garrigue-focused notes of the southern Rhone. A long-time proponent of organic farming, his wines always taste a little clearer and better defined than his neighbors. His Partagi Red (French for shared) is an easy, quaffable Rhone that includes a new and increasingly promising grape in the Rhone set. To the 50% Grenache and 20% Syrah, Jean-Louis has added Marselan, a crossing of Grenache and Malbec resistant to both mildew and extreme heat. The result is delightfully quaffable, with aromas of blueberry and black cherry, orange peel, black pepper and oregano. The palate is clean and fruity, with no oak influence. Cherries, strawberries, and orange peel bounce along with good acidity that leaves a waft of citrus on the finish. As long as this Marselan grape isn’t allowed in Cotes-du-Rhone proper, we’re going to keep enjoying these fantastic values as growers prove its worth. Serve with burgers, pizzas, everyday pastas, and anything else that calls for easy Cotes-du-Rhone.
